How to play

Slide tiles across a four-by-four board. Equal neighbours combine into a tile twice their value; try to make 2048 while keeping space for new tiles.

  1. Focus the board and use arrow keys, swipe, or press a direction button.
  2. A move slides all tiles in that direction. A new tile appears only when the board changes.
  3. Use Undo last move to reconsider one turn. Reaching 2048 lets you continue towards larger tiles.

A worked merge

Move the row 2, 2, 2, 2 to the left and it becomes 4, 4, empty, empty before a new tile appears. Each original tile can merge only once in a move, so those two new fours do not immediately become eight. The two merges add eight points. A later move combining the fours adds another eight.

Leave room to manoeuvre

A full board is not necessarily finished: adjacent equal values can still merge. Trouble begins when no direction can move or combine anything. Keeping larger tiles near one edge and smaller values nearby can make the board easier to read. Check the whole row or column before moving; a useful small merge can also displace your largest tile.

Common questions

Why did a key press add no new tile?
If no tile moved or merged, the board did not change and no tile is added. This is not a lost turn.
Does Undo keep an entire history?
No. It restores the immediately preceding move, including the score. The current board is saved locally, but a full move history is not retained.
