Watts become kilowatt-hours

Divide watts by 1,000, then multiply by hours of use. A 2,000-watt heater running for two hours uses 4 kWh at continuous full power. Multiply that by your tariff to estimate the cost.

Use average power where you can

Thermostats switch heaters on and off; fridges and washing machines do not draw their rated power continuously. A measured kWh figure or average wattage gives a better estimate. Standing charges are excluded because this calculates the extra cost of the appliance.

The annual figure uses 365 days at your chosen weekly frequency. The monthly figure is one-twelfth of that estimate.
